Planning began in 1978 by members of the Junior League of Palo Alto, with later assistance by the San Jose Junior League. The City of San Jose promised funding in the 1980s, and the first 20,000-square-foot temporary exhibit opened in 1990. On October 31, 1998, a brand-new 132,000-square-foot facility was inaugurated as The Tech Museum of Innovation. In May 2019, the organization was renamed The Tech Interactive, signaling a bold evolution that put participation front and center. In 2015, the museum was awarded the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the highest honor a U.S. museum, science center, or cultural institution can achieve.

One of the newest and most exciting experiences is Dream Garden, an immersive AI-powered exhibit where creativity meets technology. Over at the Pixel Playground, interactive exhibits let you dabble in AI, roller coaster design, and digital painting programs.

The Tech is home to the largest IMAX Dome Theater on the West Coast, which plays a variety of educational films and the occasional Hollywood blockbuster. At this IMAX Dome Theater, you can experience the world’s first laser projector for a dome theater — with a four-story wraparound screen and 12,000 watts of digital surround sound, it’s a technically advanced and visually stunning one-of-a-kind movie experience. Here, visitors can journey through deep space, dive beneath the ocean, or discover prehistoric worlds in jaw-dropping detail. Atmosphere & Design
The building has a distinctive mango and azure color scheme and spans three floors. On the lower level, there is a complex multi-story sculpture titled Origin, inside a 45-foot-tall cylindrical tower, portraying relationships among art, technology, and natural resources of the earth. Near the entrance, there is Science on a Roll, a popular rolling ball sculpture by George Rhoads, and the front wall is inscribed with quotations from iconic Silicon Valley entrepreneurs Bill Hewlett, David Packard, Bob Noyce, and Gordon Moore. The building was designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta.
