Discover Augusta’s Timeless Medical Landmark

Established in 1829, the Medical College of Georgia was the third-oldest medical school in the Southeast. The Old Medical College building, constructed between 1834 and 1836, served as its main facility until 1913. Designed by architect Charles Blaney Cluskey, the building is a prime example of Greek Revival architecture, featuring a full-height portico with six fluted Doric columns and a central dome.

Architectural Significance

The building’s design reflects the Classical proportions admired in the 19th century. Constructed of brick and stuccoed to resemble stone, it boasts a monumental facade and a shallow-pitch hip roof. The interior once housed lecture halls, laboratories, and a library, providing a conducive environment for medical education.

Preservation and Modern Use

In 1987, the Medical College of Georgia Foundation acquired the building, restoring it to its 19th-century appearance while upgrading its systems to modern standards. Today, it serves as a venue for events and is open for self-guided tours by appointment, allowing visitors to explore its rich history.

Atmosphere & Décor

The Old Medical College exudes a sense of grandeur and history. Its well-maintained grounds and classical architecture create an inviting atmosphere for visitors. While the interior is not always accessible, the exterior and surrounding areas offer ample opportunities for exploration and reflection.
