Long before Ohio had a single park district to its name, one man on horseback explored a lush valley along Mill Creek and decided the land was simply too beautiful to be swallowed up by industry. That man was Volney Rogers, and the vision he turned into reality back in 1891 is now one of the most remarkable outdoor destinations in the entire Midwest. As one of the largest metropolitan parks in the United States, Mill Creek Park is an abundant natural oasis and claimed by many as the “crown jewel” of this region.
Mill Creek Park was established in 1891 by Volney Rogers as the first park district in Ohio, and is the largest area of the MetroParks, encompassing over 2,658 acres of the MetroParks’ total 5,000 acres. Stretching from the city of Youngstown out through Mahoning County, this is a place where history, nature, recreation, and community all converge in spectacular fashion — and the best part? It’s largely free to explore.
Highlights & Things to Do

Lanterman’s Mill & the Gorge Trails
Located at 1001 Canfield Rd., you’ll find Lanterman’s Mill and Covered Bridge, accessible from a parking lot just a short walk to your destination. This historic location, built in the 1840s, is highlighted by a fully restored, operational mill, and visitors can browse the gift shop, which includes stone-ground cornmeal, buckwheat and whole wheat flour. A must-see is Lanterman’s Mill, where you can watch them grind the grain into meal and flour — or watch the raging water after a fresh rain.
Fellows Riverside Gardens
Fellows Riverside Gardens is a free public garden located at the northern end of Mill Creek Park. This twelve-acre display garden features a landscape of remarkable beauty with diverse and colorful plant displays, roses of all classes, seasonal displays of annuals, perennials, flowering bulbs, and scenic vistas. The Gardens are consistently praised for how beautifully they are maintained, and the elegant on-site visitor center makes them a worthy destination all on their own — in any season.
Trails for Every Kind of Explorer
Mill Creek Park offers 20 miles of drives and 45 miles of trails. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll or something more rugged, there’s a trail here for you. Cascade Gorge is a scenic and secluded section of Mill Creek Park home to two small waterfalls and several cascades. The trail goes through the Witch’s Caves area, which is home to several rock formations and small caves, then enters Cascade Gorge, which has several scenic views of the waterfalls below. For a more relaxed outing, the East Gorge Trail and West Gorge Trail together make up the Gorge Trail Loop — a nature-filled two-mile hike along Mill Creek.
Donald Ross Golf Courses
Golf enthusiasts can schedule a tee time at the renowned 36-hole Mill Creek Golf Course designed by Donald Ross. This is a legitimately historic layout — Donald Ross is considered one of the greatest golf course architects of all time — and playing here is a bucket-list experience for any golfer passing through the Mahoning Valley. Mill Creek Park also offers a Par 3 Course, located in the Wick Recreation Area, making it a great spot for beginners or families just picking up the game.
Boating, Fishing & the Three Lakes
Mill Creek flows through the park in a northerly direction, supplying water to three lakes. The park has three lakes with canoe, paddle boat, and kayak privileges — perfect for a laid-back afternoon on the water. Fishing is also a popular draw, and the lakes set a gorgeous backdrop no matter the time of year.
MetroParks Bikeway
The MetroParks Bikeway, an 11-mile paved bike trail, guides guests from the Mahoning County line all the way to Western Reserve Road in Canfield. With multiple trailheads and parking lots spread along the route, it’s easy to hop on at whatever point suits your plans best.
The Morley Performing Arts Pavilion
Located within the Wick Recreation Area, the Judge Leo P. Morley Performing Arts Pavilion is a magnificent outdoor venue which opened in 1994 and earned an Award of Honor from the Ohio Society of American Institute of Architects. Boasting a 1,600 sq. ft. stage and a 2.5-acre lawn seating area, it has hosted the “Live! at the Morley” summer concert series and many other musical and theatrical performances.
Atmosphere & Natural Setting

Volney Rogers believed that land itself could improve the lives of Youngstown citizens by providing a healthful alternative to the rapidly industrializing city, and after exploring the area on horseback, he knew that the land bordering Mill Creek with its hemlock-laced gorge, breathtaking falls, and magnificent vistas would need to be protected from industrial development. That protective spirit is still palpable today — the park feels genuinely wild and spacious, even as it sits in the middle of an urban county.
The park is strikingly beautiful across all four seasons. It’s beautiful in every season, with autumn being especially breathtaking when the trees are ablaze with red, yellow, and orange leaves. In spring and summer, the gardens burst into color, the trails fill with birdsong, and the lakes shimmer in the warm light. Visitors often encounter a variety of wildlife including deer, squirrels, and various bird species throughout the venue.
The park is well-groomed with clean landscapes and proper maintenance throughout its trails and facilities. It’s the kind of place that feels cared for — not manicured and sterile, but genuinely loved and tended to with pride.
Other Considerations

What does it cost to visit?
Most areas of Mill Creek Metro Parks are completely free to enter and explore, including the trails, gardens, and scenic drives. There are educational facilities, stunning free public gardens, a performing arts pavilion, two 18-hole Donald Ross golf courses, playgrounds, lakes, ponds, wetlands, trails, and breathtaking views. Golf and certain rentals carry their own fees, but the vast majority of the park’s experiences won’t cost you a dime.
Is it good for families and kids?
The park is family-, dog-, and kid-friendly. You can adjust the trails you choose very easily, as they all loop around the creek. There is also a small educational center that is great for kids to learn about local wildlife. The Wick Recreation Area also features a children’s splash pad and playground, making it an easy choice for a full family day out.
How big is the park — should I plan ahead?
Because Mill Creek MetroParks is so expansive — with countless activities, attractions, and trails — it’s important to know the specific location of the area you’re planning to visit. The park spans multiple cities and townships, so pulling up the park’s website and map before you go will save you a lot of time and confusion once you arrive.
What about parking?
Parking is generally easy to find, with multiple dedicated lots spread throughout the park’s various areas and trailheads. The park is easy to find via Google Maps and has decent parking — and it’s typically not overcrowded, so you won’t have to fight for a spot.
Are there any things to keep in mind?
Some areas of the park, particularly along certain lake fronts, have seen varying maintenance levels over the years — so experiences can differ slightly depending on which section you visit. That said, the overall scale, variety, and natural beauty of the park far outweigh any localized concerns. Whether you’re visiting from nearby Pennsylvania or are in a completely different time zone, Mill Creek Park is the perfect location for exploring, relaxing, and recreation.
