Climb 300 Dune Stairs To One Of West Michigan’s Best Lake Views In Grand Haven

Your quads will remember this one. Rosy Mound Natural Area is an Ottawa County park along Lake Michigan’s shoreline south of Grand Haven, built around a genuine Great Lakes dune system complete with towering wooded dunes, foredunes, and a dramatic blowout where the wind has stripped the vegetation right down to bare sand. Getting from the parking lot to the water means covering roughly 0.7 miles and about 1,000 feet of stairs, which sounds intimidating on paper and, honestly, is a legitimate workout in person.

What makes the effort worth it is the payoff: an elevated overlook deck perched high in the dunes with a sweeping view of Lake Michigan that ranks among the best on this stretch of coast, followed by a walk down to a quiet, less crowded beach. In 2023, Ottawa County Parks nearly doubled the site’s footprint by acquiring an additional 127 acres next door, bringing the park to roughly 291 acres of protected dune forest and shoreline.

Trail Highlights and What to Expect

The main hiking trail is surfaced in crushed stone and easy on the feet for most of its length, right up until it turns into a long, steep staircase that carries you up and over the dune ridge. Most people find the climb down easier than the climb back up, so pace yourself and plan on stopping to catch your breath at a few of the landings along the way.

The Dune Overlook deck is the centerpiece of the whole park, a wooden platform set high above the treeline where Lake Michigan opens up in front of you with almost nothing blocking the horizon. It is consistently the moment people talk about afterward, and it is a fantastic spot for photos, especially with a little golden light in the evening.

Beyond the main route, roughly half a mile of additional boardwalk winds through the dune system, giving you a gentler way to explore the blowout and surrounding woods without tackling the full staircase. These boardwalks are a nice option if you want dune scenery without committing to the beach descent.

Once you reach the shoreline, the beach itself is sandy, spacious, and noticeably quieter than the more popular public beaches closer to downtown Grand Haven. There are no lifeguards on duty, so swimmers should treat it with the same caution as any open Lake Michigan beach, particularly when waves and currents pick up.

Atmosphere and Setting

The park feels wild in a way that is increasingly rare this close to a resort town. Thick stands of pine and hardwood forest shade most of the inland trail, and the temperature and light shift noticeably as you move from shaded woods into open, sun-bleached dune sand near the coast. It is a landscape that changes character every few hundred feet, which keeps the hike interesting even though the round trip is fairly short.

Near the beach, a distinctive shade canopy structure gives hikers a place to rest out of direct sun before heading back up the stairs, and it has become a bit of a landmark within the park. The overall vibe leans peaceful and a little rugged rather than polished or resort-like, which is exactly the appeal for people trying to get away from the busier beach scenes nearby.

Other Considerations

Is this a hard hike? Yes, the stairs make it more strenuous than a typical beach walk, and the return climb catches a lot of first-timers off guard, so bring water and take it slow if you are not used to stair climbing.

Can I bring my dog? No, dogs are not permitted at Rosy Mound aside from service animals, which is worth knowing before you plan a visit with a pet.

Do I need to pay for parking? A vehicle permit fee applies during the busy season, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, so check current Ottawa County Parks permit pricing before you go in summer.

What are the hours? The park is open 7am to 10pm from March 1 through October 15, and 7am to 8pm the rest of the year.

Is it good for families? Kids generally handle the stairs fine and often treat the climb like an adventure, but strollers and anyone with mobility limitations will have a tough time given the terrain, so plan accordingly.
