Cats and coffee sound like an odd pairing until you actually sit in a room with a dozen of them while sipping a lavender latte. That’s the entire premise behind Constellation Cat Cafe, a Lansing nonprofit that has spent the better part of a decade proving the combination works better than anyone expected.
What started in East Lansing has since grown into a full-service coffee shop and adoption center now planted in a century-old building in Old Town Lansing. The cafe pours espresso drinks up front and houses somewhere between 15 and 30 adoptable cats in a separate lounge, all working toward one simple mission: finding these animals permanent homes.
What There Is To Love Here

The cat room is the obvious draw, and it delivers. Visitors get to spend real time with rescue cats in an environment built around them, complete with tall windows for sunbathing, wooden wall perches for climbing, and sisal scratching posts scattered throughout. Every cat in the room is spayed or neutered and current on vaccines, so the focus stays on getting acquainted rather than worrying about health concerns.
This isn’t a novelty attraction bolted onto a coffee shop; adoption is the actual point. The nonprofit tracks its placements closely, and the team has noted a steady climb in successful adoptions since moving into the current space. If you fall for a particular cat during your visit, the staff can walk you through next steps on the spot.
The drink menu holds its own, too. Coffee comes from 517 Coffee Co., a local roaster, and most of the syrups are made in house rather than pulled from a bottle. Lavender shows up as a signature flavor, hot chocolate gets called out often as a standout, and there are seasonal specials alongside matcha, mocktails, and dairy-free options for anyone who wants a drink without the cat room add-on.
Cleanliness comes up again and again from people who visit, which matters a lot in a space packed with cats. There’s no lingering litter box smell, the surfaces stay tidy, and the staff clearly keep on top of maintenance rather than letting things slide during busy stretches.
Atmosphere & Décor
The building itself has a story worth knowing. Constructed in the 1800s and previously home to the Su Casa boutique, it needed a serious amount of renovation before Constellation could move in during August 2024, including repairs from a car crash that had damaged the structure the year before. Owning the building rather than renting gave the nonprofit room to build out cat-specific features that wouldn’t have been possible in a leased storefront.
Inside, the split between coffee shop and cat lounge keeps things organized. The cafe side feels like a standard neighborhood coffee shop, warm and casual, while the cat room next door has its own separate, contained feel so allergy concerns and crowding stay manageable. Natural light pours in through the tall windows, giving the cats plenty of spots to perch and nap while you watch from a nearby chair.
Other Considerations

Do I need a reservation? Booking your cat room visit online ahead of time is the way to go since the room only holds about 12 people at once, though walk-ins get squeezed in when there’s space available.
What are the hours? The cafe runs Monday through Thursday from noon to 7pm, Friday from 10am to 8pm, Saturday from 9am to 8pm, and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.
Can I just get coffee without visiting the cats? Yes, the coffee shop operates as its own full-service space, so you can grab a drink at the counter without ever stepping into the cat room.
Is this a good spot for a group outing? It’s earned a reputation locally as a favorite hangout for both students and seniors, plus it’s known around town for its trivia nights, so it works well for a laid-back group visit.
