Athens, Ohio’s Most Beloved Coffee Shop Is a Late-Night Hub for Art, Music, and Community

Some coffee shops sell you a drink. This one sells you a sense of belonging. With more than 4,000 square feet of cozy space and a mission rooted in fair and just business practices, Donkey Coffee and Espresso has grown from a scrappy Athens startup into one of Southeast Ohio’s most iconic community gathering places. It’s the kind of spot that former Ohio University students bring their spouses back to visit years later, eager to share the experience that shaped so many of their college memories.

One of the old school “second wave” coffee shops that first cropped up in the 1990s, it’s great for coffee but even better as a comfortable space for studying, meeting, writing, or catching small concerts and performances. Founder Christopher Pyle built it with a clear vision: to create a common place that harbored community, social justice, music, and art.

What Makes It Worth the Visit

From the very beginning, one of the first commitments Pyle made was to ensure the coffee was fair trade, a practice where companies pay producers in developing countries a fair amount for their efforts. That ethical foundation still runs through everything Donkey does today. The menu is vegan, gluten free, and dairy free inclusive, meaning there is truly something for everyone, and they source from local coffee brands.

Their signature Espresso Roast is described as smooth, rich, and with a hint of sweetness, topped with a lusciously thick layer of microfoam. If espresso-forward drinks are your thing, the classic latte and mocha are crowd favorites. For something with a little more complexity, their chai espresso blend is a hot or iced combination of irresistible chai with a shot of espresso, delivering black tea, rich spices, and milk in deliciously spicy sweetness.

Donkey also pours cold brew on tap, offering an unmistakably smooth iced coffee fresh from the tap. And if you’re in the mood for something a little more indulgent, their coffee milkshake can be flavored exactly as you’d like. Pair any drink with a freshly baked chocolate chip muffin or a bagel, and you’ve got yourself a pretty perfect morning.

Beyond the beverages, Donkey is a genuine cultural venue. Open mic night takes place every Thursday, regularly showcasing amazing local musicians in a warm, supportive environment. Live music, poetry slams, book readings, and community events fill the calendar throughout the year, giving you a reason to come back again and again.

A Space That Tells a Story

Bright purple walls and little nooks make for great spots to sip on your drink, and the interior feels like it was designed by someone who genuinely loves people. There are several couches that are noticeably squishy and comfortable, along with plenty of table seating throughout the multi-level space. Whether you want to be in the middle of the buzz or tucked away in a quiet corner with a book, you’ll find your spot here.

Wrapping around the wall above the steps leading to the second floor is a painted mural featuring many recognizable faces from the music scene, created by Athens local and artist Kevinn Pelham Drake, who has continued adding new faces to it over the years. It’s a genuinely striking piece of art that tends to spark conversations between strangers, which feels very on-brand for a place like this.

Upstairs you’ll also find a great patio and loads of cozy nooks to visit with friends or just enjoy your coffee in peace. Other amenities include free wireless access, a dedicated justice room stocked with brochures from local organizations, and board games available for anyone to use.

Good to Know Before You Go

What does it cost? Prices are low and the service is excellent and prompt. Most espresso drinks land in the $3 to $6 range, making it an easy, affordable stop whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee or settling in for the afternoon.

When can I visit? Donkey is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to midnight, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 AM to midnight, making it one of the few coffee shops in the area where a late-night caffeine run is actually a legitimate option.

Is it good for families or solo visitors? Absolutely on both counts. The shop is kid-friendly, with board games on hand to keep younger visitors entertained. Solo visitors will feel just as at home, whether they’re there to work with the free WiFi or simply people-watch in one of the cozy nooks.

Is it easy to find parking? Donkey sits right in the heart of uptown Athens on Washington Street, which means street parking and nearby public lots are your best bet. Plan a few extra minutes if you’re visiting on a busy game day or during Ohio University’s peak semester periods, as the area can get lively.

Any hidden gems worth knowing about? A professor at Ohio University once surveyed students asking which place outside of campus made them feel the most respected and loved. Overwhelmingly, people said Donkey. That kind of reputation doesn’t happen by accident. It’s worth pausing to notice the little details: the justice room, the mural, the handwritten signage. They all add up to something that feels genuinely rare in a coffee shop.
