Get Ready to Laugh—and Snack—Your Way Through Vintage Route 66

Ever imagined stopping for a cheeseburger only to be asked, “Do you want cheese on that?” That’s Delgadillo’s charm. Built in 1953 by the quick-witted Juan Delgadillo using scrap lumber and humor, this kitschy drive-in perched on historic Route 66 has been serving puns with patties for decades.

What Makes It a Must-Visit

Juan’s creativity knew no bounds—he sliced the roof off a 1936 Chevrolet, decorated it with horns, decals, and a Christmas tree, and parked it out front as a quirky billboard. He extended this playful spirit to the menu, featuring offerings like the “cheeseburger with cheese” and the mysterious “dead chicken,” and used humor in every corner—from signs warning you that you’re “parking at your own risk” to the neon sign that proudly announces, “Sorry, we’re open.”

Over the years, the interior walls have become collages of global travel ephemera—business cards, currency, photos—creating a living map of visitors from around the world.

Atmosphere & Décor

The vibe here isn’t kitschy by accident—it’s lovingly curated chaos. Picnics under awnings, bright, retro signs proclaiming burgers and shakes, and playful décor create a stop that’s both nostalgic and unexpected. Inside and out, every element—from prank doors to condiment squirts—is designed to surprise and delight.

Other Considerations

So how’s the food? Think good old Route 66 road fare—burgers, fries, malts, and shakes with Southern Arizona swagger. Visitors often recommend the classic shakes and milkshakes for a cooling treat.

What’s unique? In September 2022, Delgadillo’s set a Guinness World Record for serving 266 different milkshake varieties in about 75 minutes—most locally doled out for free in a celebration of Route 66 camaraderie.

Is there community significance? Very much so. Juan’s brother, Angel Delgadillo, helped establish the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona in 1987, preserving the road’s iconic status—and he played a minor but poignant inspiration role in Pixar’s Cars.
