Los Angeles Has A Cat Café On Melrose Ave Where You Can Cuddle Rescue Cats — And Maybe Even Adopt One

Coffee and cats — two things that make life measurably better — have been brilliantly combined into one of Los Angeles’s most beloved and heartwarming experiences. Crumbs & Whiskers is the first cat café in Los Angeles, and it has been charming animal lovers on the iconic stretch of Melrose Avenue ever since it opened its doors. The Los Angeles café opened on September 30, 2016, and was the first cat café to open in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

But this is far more than a novelty photo-op. The team created a beautiful, first-of-its-kind space to house homeless cats and to give animal lovers in busy cities a happy place — a place to slow down, to fall in love, to adopt, and to have the experience of a lifetime. Whether you’re a lifelong cat person or simply looking for a dose of something joyful, this place delivers in a big way.

The Story Behind The Café

The business founder, Kanchan Singh, opted to finance the venture by crowdfunding through a Kickstarter project with a US$15,000 target, an amount which she was initially uncertain that she could raise. The Crumbs & Whiskers Kickstarter project reached its funding target less than a day after it launched, and doubled this amount prior to the project deadline. That kind of early enthusiasm was a sign of things to come.

Singh started Crumbs & Whiskers after visiting a cat café in Thailand. That spark of inspiration grew into something far bigger — a business with locations on both coasts and a genuine mission at its core. The café partners with local rescues to save cats and kittens at risk of euthanasia, then cares for them until they’re adopted into loving homes.

The Cat Experience

The main event, of course, is the cats themselves. The Los Angeles café is partnered with Stray Cat Alliance, a Los Angeles–based animal rescue which provides cats for the café. At any given time, you’ll find a rotating cast of wonderfully unique felines roaming freely through the lounge — each with their own distinct personality, from the boldly curious to the blissfully lazy.

By exposing both cats and potential adopters to each other in a unique environment, the café facilitates the human-animal connection, which results in higher adoption rates. Unlike meeting a cat through the cold, stressful walls of a shelter, you get to see how these animals truly behave — playful, affectionate, or happily independent. It provides you an opportunity to get to know a cat and their personality in a friendly, calming environment.

Guests appreciate the option to purchase cat treat bags, enjoy complimentary Polaroid pictures with the cats, and potentially adopt one of these adorable companions. Picking up a small treat bag is a great tip — it instantly makes you the most popular person in the room. Sessions are timed, and you can choose between shorter and longer booking windows. Many visitors who book the thirty-minute session wish they had opted for the 70-minute experience instead.

One insider tip worth noting: if you want to be covered in zooming, playful kittens, visit during the first time-slot of the day and the last time-slot of the day! The cats tend to be calmer and more cuddly mid-session, while early and late slots are peak playtime energy.

Drinks & Treats

Crumbs & Whiskers partners with local coffee shops to provide fresh, delicious drinks and treats to visitors. By outsourcing the menu, they are able to keep the cats safe, the space clean, and the local economy stimulated. Think freshly crafted coffees, hot chocolates, and baked goods — all sourced nearby and brought right to you. All of the drinks and cookies you can order during your visit come from another location down the street, and no food is prepared on-site.

The drinks are a lovely complement to the experience, giving you something warm to sip while a cat inevitably decides your lap is their new favorite nap spot. All contributions to the Cat Health Fund go directly toward covering the cats’ medical expenses and general care. Even the merch you’ll find on-site supports the cats — 100% of proceeds from their merchandise goes to the Cat Health Fund, which provides health care for all cats in the cafés.

Atmosphere & Décor

Step inside and you’ll immediately understand why this place photographs so well. One part groovy rec-room and one part love nest, the interior design is modern, yet lush and inviting. The space has evolved over the years — the dark, moody aesthetic of its early days has given way to something brighter and more colorful, though the commitment to cozy, cat-friendly design has always remained.

The café is strikingly clean, the decorations are beautiful, and there are comfy seating areas and plenty of space to walk around. Seating options range from plush cushions on the floor to chairs and low sofas, all deliberately low to the ground to invite you down to cat level. The whole scene is delightfully decadent and beckons you to get down and cuddle with the kitties — and that is very much the point.

Everything is bright and airy, and the cats are clearly in kitty heaven as they get so much attention and love from the visitors and staff. Cat trees, cozy hideaways, and sunny window perches are scattered throughout, giving the felines plenty of spots to lounge, play, or simply observe their adoring public.

Other Considerations

How much does it cost? The entrance fee goes towards the cats’ wellbeing and care and includes a drink. Pricing varies by session length, so check the website for the most current rates. It’s worth it — and knowing that your visit directly supports the care and adoption of rescue animals makes spending the money feel genuinely good.

Do I need to book in advance? Crumbs & Whiskers uses an online booking system for scheduling visits. Reservations are strongly recommended and sessions do fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Booking ahead through their website is the surest way to lock in your preferred time.

Can I bring my kids? The café is unable to admit guests under the age of 7 for the safety of both the child and the cats. Kids who are 7 and older are welcome, and the experience tends to be a genuinely magical one for young animal lovers. It also makes for a wonderfully unique and memorable birthday outing.

What about parking? There is no parking lot at the cat café. You can find nearby street parking on either Melrose or Fairfax. Some visitors have had to find parking 5–6 minutes away from the location, so build a little extra time into your visit and consider rideshare if you want to skip the parking hunt altogether.

Is the cat mood guaranteed? It’s worth setting expectations here — these are real, living animals with minds of their own. Some days the cats are in full cuddle mode; other days, they’d rather play or nap on their own terms. These are live animals, so you need to adapt to what the animals prefer at the time — they may simply be tired of cuddling after a long day with visitors. It’s all part of the charm, and the unpredictability honestly makes it more authentic.
