Michigan’s Hidden Gem Near Silver Lake Dunes Has a Lavender Labyrinth, Fish Boils, and Legendary Cherry Pie

History has a way of putting down roots in certain places and simply refusing to leave — and Cherry Point Farm & Market in Shelby, Michigan is a prime example. One of the oldest operating fruit farms in Oceana County, the property’s history stretches back to the late 1860s. Boasting cherry orchards first planted in 1871, the farm has been owned and operated by the Bull family since 1949, who soon opened a small market selling fruit grown on the land — which became a popular pit stop in the early ’60s after Marilyn Bull began baking the farm’s coveted cherry pies.

Just a mile from the Lake Michigan shoreline and minutes from the Silver Lake sand dunes, this beloved family farm has since evolved into one of West Michigan’s most charming destinations, layering fresh produce, homemade baked goods, a walk-through lavender labyrinth, and unforgettable outdoor dining events into a single, deeply satisfying experience that keeps visitors coming back year after year.

In 2002, fourth-generation owner Barbara Bull decided to give back to the community by developing the land next to the market into a massive lavender labyrinth. Located just minutes from the shores of Lake Michigan, the labyrinth spans a square plot of land that is 300 feet wide and includes hundreds of Michigan lavender plants. It’s an utterly serene, fragrant experience — and one you won’t easily forget.

The idea is not to get lost the way you would in a traditional maze. Instead, visitors are encouraged to explore the winding paths with the help of a map that identifies herbal, medicinal, ancient, and other herbs by name and location. The owner encourages visitors to take their time while wandering through the labyrinth as a meditative experience. If you’re visiting during peak summer, plan your trip around the bloom: Michigan lavender typically blooms in late June or July, and the farm tries to wait until after Labor Day to harvest the plants so as many visitors can enjoy it as possible each year.

The farm’s signature fish boil is the stuff of local legend. The farm is well known for hosting fiery outdoor fish boils during the summer months, following traditions brought to the Great Lakes by Scandinavian immigrants — whitefish from the lake is boiled with potatoes in a large kettle and finished off with a pint of kerosene thrown over the flames. Held on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during the summer months, those attending are treated to mouthwatering whitefish along with coleslaw, bread, potatoes, and onions — a watch-and-learn experience as well as a satisfying dinner topped off with cherry pie and ice cream. Reservations are required, so plan ahead.

In addition to the homemade cherry pie that’s been on the menu for over 60 years, Cherry Point is also well known for its succulent strudels and turnovers packed with cherries straight from the orchard, along with hand-made donuts, jams, jellies, fudge, and more. During peak season, the market also offers lunch specials — like a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich with cherry mustard on house-made bread — that can be ordered to-go or enjoyed at one of the property’s picnic tables.

Beyond the food, the market itself is a treasure trove worth exploring. It offers a well-curated selection of clothing, souvenirs, jewelry, and gifts made by Michigan artists. Lavender-inspired products are a fan favorite: lavender essential oils, lavender jelly, lavender soaps, and lotions are among the most-reached-for items on the shelves. Be sure to also stop by the rock garden, an area filled with word stones that is a big hit with visitors of all ages.

For those craving a more structured event, visitors can also enjoy Tuesday Teas or Sunday’s Flapjacks and Fruit. Each of these special dining experiences requires reservations and adds a wonderfully old-fashioned, unhurried pace to any visit.

Atmosphere & Décor

The area, known as Little Point Sable, is where the sun, sand, and lake come together to create a bountiful farming area, as well as one of nature’s greatest playgrounds. The property itself feels like stepping into a simpler, slower era — open countryside views, blooming gardens, and the gentle scent of lavender drifting through the air create a setting that’s equal parts beautiful and deeply calming.

From around the country and the world, families visit Cherry Point Farm and Market — not only to snatch a gorgeous quart of cherries on their travels, but also to visit the buildings, lavender labyrinth, and herb garden. The market building itself is warm and welcoming, brimming with colorful jams, fresh produce displays, and locally made goods that feel thoughtfully chosen rather than mass-produced.

There’s also a piece of history waiting in the parking lot. The farm is proud of a Michigan Historical Marker recently erected and dedicated on the property, which commemorates the history of Blackberry Ridge — an early settlement founded in 1857. It’s a small but meaningful touch that roots the whole experience in the deeper story of this remarkable stretch of Michigan land.
